WiMAX: Worldwide Interoperability Microwave Access What the heck does that mean? Think of your current wireless internet solution you may have at your office or home. Connectivity to the Internet is limited to so many feet. Imagine taking your high speed broadband Internet mobile to the local park or coffee shop without having to connect to a WiFi "hotspot" and maintain the same, original connection? With WiMAX you can. Not only can you stretch your Internet connectivity to your favorite local hangout spot, but you can also take it beyond. Newport Digital Technologies offers this broadband wireless access technology right now. You can maintain a high speed connection, and have streaming video capabilities as well. The applications for this technology are endless. Here in southern California, we currently in the process of installing a WiMAX base station and subscriber station for the Orange County Department of Education. Newport Digital is participating in a $500M state and federal grant program to bring not only the WiMAX Internet technology, but also an eLearning solution to schools and public areas. The schools would all be able to log onto their own, secure network. If schools could be connected with the long-range WiMAX technology, why not libraries, police and fire stations, lifeguard towers along the coast. Lifeguards could be on a network to monitor real-time water and weather conditions and be able to communicate with each other and even the Coast Guard. WiMAX could also be utilized in mountainous terrains, flat farmland, and desert regions such as the Australian outback. Following the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, WiMAX was used for communications by FEMA and the FCC. In the same manner, you can eliminate using up your cell phone minutes by utilizing Skype on your smartphone. Your phone could be connected the WiMAX network, allowing you to make unlimited calls, via Internet, worldwide without paying the hefty international fees assessed by cellular providers. WiMAX opens the door for other technologies Newport Digital showcases such as RFID and eLearning. The door is opening and we are running in. |
